Two years ago, Shelby American released the next-generation GT500. With a 760-horsepower supercharged 5.2 Liter V8 engine, it wasn't just the most powerful GT500 to ever exist, but it was also the most fun. Well, that was yesterday.
Nowadays, companies are rolling out tons of concept cars that will never come to fruition. However, this past fall, Shelby American has announced plans to release a limited-edition (30 production units) GT500 test car dubbed the "Code Red" to the public. Now, this isn’t any ordinary GT500. To start, Shelby has taken the stock Whipple supercharger and replaced it with a more powerful twin-turbocharger setup. Aside from that, they have completely rebuilt the engine with full drag spec internals, allowing the Code Red to go from 760 horsepower all the way up to 1,000 horsepower. But if that’s still not enough, you can fill up the Code Red with E85 High-Octane pump gas, bringing the total power output to 1,300 horsepower and 1,000 ft-lb of torque.
Sadly, the Code Red won't be doing the grocery run, as with its crazy track width and massive horsepower it doesn't qualify as street legal. Once again, it is rumored that while the original GT500 has a base starting price of $73,000, the Code Red will have a starting price of $209,000.
But, with the real thing hitting the streets soon, or should I say tracks, we have a lot to look forward to!
