THEATRE

The SFHS Theatre Program produces six main stage productions in our 400-seat theater each year. Past shows have included *Radium Girls*, *Father of the Bride*, *Les Misérables*, *The Lightning Thief*, and *Beauty & the Beast*. All students, regardless of experience, are taught the basics of acting, character development, and stage communication. Theatre is open to all students interested in acting, stage crew, set design, costume, makeup, and more.

SFHS offers many opportunities to get involved in the theatrical arts.

  • Acting

Students wishing to be on stage and act have numerous opportunities to refine and develop their craft. The annual fall play is typically a larger production where in recent years there have been no cuts. The theatre department puts on an annual rendition of Charles Dicken’s “A Christmas Carol” and also has acting opportunities within the spring musical, Musical Revue (songs and scenes selected from a variety of shows), and the 24-hour theatre production (written, directed, produced, and performed by students in 24 hours).

Through teamwork, practice, planning, and fun, Crew coordinates set changes, effects, and stage management to create a cohesive technical performance. Crew also includes lighting, set design, audio, costumes, makeup, and painting. The crew is typically 30+ students with opportunities to stage manage and assistant direct.
  • Illinois Theatre Fest

The Illinois High School Theatre Festival is the largest and longest-running competitive high school theatre festival in the world. The three-day festival takes place annually in January and over 4,000 students, teachers, university representatives, exhibitors, and volunteers come together to put on over 25 different high school productions and over 150 workshops in every area of theatre – acting, dance, tech theatre, theatre education, improv, directing, stage management, and more. In 2025, St. Francis High School director, Brandon Lewis, was the first Catholic High School Illinois Theatre fest director in its program’s history.
