The Growth of Green Day

Mia Mirabella
Formed in 1988 in the suburbs of Berkeley, California and inspired by the big grunge bands in the
peak of rock'n'roll, Green Day was formed by the lead singer and guitarist Billie Joe Armstrong, bassist Mike Dirnt, and drummer Tre Cool.
Originally named "Sweet Children," they changed their band name to "Green Day" because they didn’t want to be confused with another California-based band called "Sweet Baby." The name "Green Day" was chosen because of the band member's shared love of marijuana

Their first album was released in 1991 and was called 1039/ Smoothed Out Slappy Hours. This album was released during the time when bands like Nirvana, Pearl Jam, AC/DC, and others were at their peak. Following in their footsteps, Green Day released this distorted, distant, and angsty album.

Over the years, they have released 12 additional albums including Kerplunk (1991), Dookie (1994), Insomniac (1995), Nimrod (1997), Warning (1997), Warning (2000), American Idiot (2004), 21st Century Breakdown (2009), UnoDos, and Tres (all released in 2012), Revolution Radio (2016), and most recently, Father of all M************ (2020).

It does not look like Green Day will stop making music anytime soon. On April 18, 2015, Green Day was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame by Fall Out Boy, with whom they are currently touring on the Hella Mega Tour with Weezer.
