Charisma. Charm. Class. Love. Born into eternal life on August 30, 2022, Richard Ruddy Schulz, of Glen
Ellyn, IL, best known as “Dick” Schulz, was born in Chicago, IL on July 31, 1941 to the late Eileen Ruddy
Matthews and the late John Schulz.
Dick was an identical twin/one half of the Schulz Twins; Dick and Don Schulz. Abandoned by their father
at the age of two, the twins, along with their mother Eileen, moved into their maternal grandparents’
home.
Living with Grandma Lou and Grandpa Rich Ruddy became one of the most important and formative
moves of Dick’s life. Having greatly treasured his upbringing with his brother, mother and grandparents,
Dick often said that while he didn’t have a father to raise him and Don, it was the love and affection
given to him by his single mom and his grandparents that made him who he was, the finest husband,
dad and grandpa on earth.
Dick married Carol Murray on September 25, 1965. Soon thereafter they had two sons, Richard and
Jason. Dick received his degree in mechanical engineering and spent the latter part of the 1960’s
designing mechanical calculators for Victor Comptometer. In the early 1970’s, Dick and Don purchased
their first of many businesses, Midwest Carbonic aka Midco, in the Quad Cities. Dick’s entrepreneurial
spirit lead him and Don to various other real estate ventures and businesses like Happy Joe’s Pizza,
Birdie’s Fine Dining, Triple DDD Leasing and more. Dick eventually sold MIDCO to Pain Enterprises and
worked at Pain Enterprises until retirement. Dick’s entrepreneurial spirit lives on in his sons and The
JRICH Company.
In the last twenty years of his life, Dick focused on one thing, his grandchildren. They remain his pride,
his joy and his legacy. He intentionally lived within minutes of them so he could spend countless hours
at soccer games, dance recitals, swim meets, basketball games and more. A carpenter by hobby, Dick
fixed, remodeled and built everything imaginable for his kids and grandkids; basement remodels, decks,
lofts, desks and anything else they could conjure up in their imagination. Dick could build anything.
Dick is preceded in death by his mother, Eileen Ruddy Matthews, his father John Schulz and his identical
twin brother, Don. He is survived by his wife Carol, sons Richard (Ann), Jason (Julia) and his eight
amazing grandchildren, Adeline, Caden, Isabella, Ellery, Sophia, Scarlett, Alex and Amelia. “Papa Dick”
will be greatly missed by all of them.
Visitation services will be held from 9:30 AM to 11:00 AM on Saturday, September 3 at St. Petronille
Church in Glen Ellyn with funeral mass at 11:00 AM. Burial immediately following at Assumption
Cemetery in Wheaton, IL.
