On September 7th, 2021, everyone’s favorite children’s show host returned to shock the world with a simple “Hi, you got a second?”
Steve Burns, the long-time host of the esteemed children’s show “Blues Clues”, released to Twitter a message commemorating the 25th anniversary of the show’s creation on Nick Jr. This message was not merely a promotion or nostalgia-preying advertisement; it was also an act of motivation for any child that had grown up with Steve.
The 2-minute “talk” begins with Burns asking a question à la "toddler tv" by pausing after his inquiry, sending even the oldest of Boomers back to the simple days of childhood. Burns then continues on to recall his abrupt exit from the show and explains that although it proved a difficult decision to make, he is certain it was for the best. It allowed him the opportunity to “use his mind” and “do many things that [he] always wanted to do.” After his explanation for this departure, Burns flips the tables to concentrate on the idea paramount in any host’s mind: his audience.
“And then look at you. And all you have done. And all you have accomplished,” Burns beams, pushing on to relate the student loans, family issues, and jobs with the titular clues at the heart of the show.
The message ends with a heartfelt 'thank you' by Burns for the audience’s support and friendship over the past 25 years, ensuring an abundance of tears welling in every creature with the slightest sliver of a soul.
Steve’s check-in represents the continuous childlike wonder present in each person, no matter their age or maturity level. It reminded so many of the love and care in the world that seems to constantly be drowned out by the ruckus caused by news of wars, death, and destruction. Sometimes, we all need a reminder that someone is on our side and rooting us on. After all, if Steve himself said “whatever it is [we’re] doing is working,” we must be doing something right!
