Cameron R. ’25 Advances to National HOSA Competition

Jamie Lavigueur
Congratulations to Cameron R. ’25 for placing 2nd at the HOSA (Health Occupations Students of America) Conference!
Cameron first became involved with HOSA thanks to a friend at another school sharing her experience.

“I reached out to Ms. Dahle and with her encouragement and support we started the SFHS chapter and I spent the next six months training and working through the qualifying rounds to eventually make it through to the State Biotechnology competition in Springfield,” Cameron said.

At the HOSA conference, where over 60 schools are represented, individuals compete in different categories in two events: a written exam taken at school and a skills event at the conference, which is a hands-on application of the written exam.

Cameron chose to compete in the Biotechnology category and was given eight skills to practice, among them being gel electrophoresis, ELISA, Bradford reagent, restriction digestion, and more. Once complete, scores from the written exam and skills tests were combined. Cameron placed second and qualified for the national competition in Houston this June.

“I was, and still am, pretty scared to compete at that level, but it has been a privilege to represent our school,” she said.

Ms. Patty Dahle created a new HOSA chapter for SFHS, which made the designation possible.

“We are so fortunate to now have a chapter for all SFHS students looking at careers in a variety of health professions,” Cameron said. “I will do my best to represent St. Francis at the national level!”
