World Language Honor Societies Inductees

Krystal LaMantia
The World Languages Department celebrated the induction of students into the Chinese, French and Spanish Honor Societies. The aim of these honor societies is to stimulate interest in the study of a world language, promote high standards of scholarship and reward scholastic achievements. Additionally, these honor societies create enthusiasm for and an understanding of different cultures and civilizations, promote and perpetuate international friendships, and reward efforts toward furthering solidarity in our interconnected world. The membership demonstrate students’ dedication to the language and culture they study. Learn more about each society:

Chinese Honor Society: The St. Francis High School chapter of the Chinese Honor Society is an organization that promotes and recognizes students who demonstrate citizenship, leadership, and community service. Members are encouraged to become life-long learners in order to gain a better understanding of Chinese language and culture, as well as play an active role as a contributing global citizen in the twenty-first century.

French Honor Society: The chapter’s name of Société Honoraire de Français is “La Résistance” in honor of the French men and women from all social economic backgrounds who resisted Hitler’s tyranny in World War II. The participants of la Resistance jointly strived to save innocent men, women, and children victimized by the Nazi German occupation of France. These brave souls battled relentlessly to regain democracy in their Motherland. The chapter's motto is: «Avoir une autre langue, c’est posséder une deuxième âme» To have another language is to possess a second soul.

Spanish Honor Society: The name Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica is for Oscar Romero a former Roman Catholic bishop of El Salvador. He witnessed human rights violations in his country and spoke out on behalf of the poor and the victims of the country’s civil war. Romero died as a result of his beliefs and is known as a Champion for World Democracy. The Spanish Honor Society's motto is “Todos a una” or All together.
