Notes from the Nurse

While many welcome the change from winter to spring, there are others who are less enthusiastic. Probably 20% of us have seasonal allergies. Spring is coming and now is the time of the year to be proactive. If your student gets symptoms at the same time every year, talk with his or her healthcare provider. Some people can prevent symptoms by starting their medicine a week or two before that time of the year.

Allergies begin when trees, flowering plants, grasses and weeds release pollen. Molds which grow in soil, vegetation and rotting wood can cause allergic symptoms when they become airborne.

Symptoms include sneezing, runny nose, congestion, cough, sinus pressure, watery eyes, as well as itchy eyes, nose and throat. These are the primary symptoms. Additionally people with severe allergies can experience other systemic complaints such as fatigue, irritability, and inability to think clearly. For those with asthma these allergens can trigger typical asthma symptoms such as shortness of breath, wheezing and cough.

FYI--you can now buy Nasacort (nasal steroid spray) over-the-counter. Click here to read about this. http://www.aaaai.org/conditions-and-treatments/library/allergy-library/triamcinolone-nasal-spray.aspx

Let's get ready.

Mentoring Edge
For a high school student, selecting a career path is not easy. Mentoring Edge connects students with mentors at top companies that help students figure out what they want to do and then develop a plan to get there.  Handpicked mentors build "career confidence" in students so they can hit the ground running when they enter college. According to the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, 50% of 22 to 27 year olds are either unemployed or have jobs that don't use their college degrees.  Contact Mentoring Edge at 630- 301-8707 or info@thementoringedge.com to help ensure your student makes the most of their college investment. Information is also available at www.TheMentoringEdge.com or Twitter @MentoringEdge
