Notes from the Nurse

Seasonal Influenza:

Seasonal influenza is serious and highly unpredictable. Each year is a new season. The single best way to protect against influenza and its potential severe complications is to get a seasonal influenza vaccine each year. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that everyone 6 months of age and older get a vaccine each year.

Schools are virus exchange systems and school children are highly efficient virus spreaders. Children have the highest rates of infection. Illness can disrupt school attendance and force parents to miss work. Studies have shown high rates of vaccination among school children (50-70%) can dramatically reduce the overall burden of disease in the entire community.

We are seeing an increase in influenza here at school that mirrors what is going on in the local community at this time. Please click here to read a letter from the Health Department that describes signs and symptoms and other important information. It's not too late to have your student vaccinated!

St. Francis Immunization Data:

We are now required to make available our immunization data that we submit each November to the State of Illinois. This information is available upon request from the Wellness Office.

A student who becomes ill during the school day should obtain a pass from his/her teacher before going to the nurse, unless an emergency situation exists. The nurse will then contact a parent if a student needs to go home. Students are not permitted to text message or call a parent via a personal cell phone during the school day to arrange dismissal on their own. Use of a cell phone during the day will result in a demerit.

A Summer Soiree Auction

The success of the auction depends heavily on your donations. So please consider making a donation to the auction. Remember, no gift is too small. Many smaller items are packaged together to form gift baskets. The after Christmas sales are great ways to find bargains on donation items. We would love to get 100% participation from all school families.

Do you need a last minute gift idea? Raffle tickets can be purchased online at Don't miss this opportunity to win one year of SFHS tuition OR the equivalent amount towards college tuition OR $10,000 CASH.

The Auction committee wishes you and your family a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
