Note from the Principal
Congratulations to Nate Kravchuk a member of Troop 23 Wheaton on achieving his Eagle Scout award. Nate's project was refurbishing the outdoor basketball court across from St. Irene School in Warrenville. The project was suggested by Fr. Jim, St. Irene's pastor, as it was an eyesore to the community and was overgrown and unusable. With over 200 hours of work, Nate, with help from family, friends and other scouts, weeded, filled cracks, sealed, sanded and painted the hoops and marked the court. Now neighborhood children are enjoying playing pick-up ball!

I hope to see many of you at Curriculum Night which begins at 6:30 p.m. in the Spyglass Gymnasium tonight.

College Planning and Admissions
Presentation September 7
On Wednesday, September 7, at 6:30 p.m., Mrs. Rigney, Director of Guidance, will present a program for parents on College Planning and Admissions in the Kuhn Cultural Arts Center. She will provide an overview of the key factors in college admission and selecton and explain the major steps in the college, scholarship, and financial aid application process. For parents who have not yet used the Naviance College Connection program, Mrs. Rigney will also review the features of this program. Because we now send all college documents electronically via the Naviance Program, it is very helpful for parents to be familiar with the steps their students must complete in Naviance. This informational program is open to parents of all grade levels but we strongly recommend that all parents of seniors attend this program.
September Special Lunch: Back to School BBQ - Friday September 2
SFHS Mobile App

We're pleased to announce the release of the mobile app for St. Francis High School. The app features easy access to news and announcements, event and athletic calendars, information for parents, students and alumni, and online donations. The app also provides useful information for prospective students. And, of course, the app features the ability for the staff to send push notifications directly to the user's phone or tablet.

To download the app on your phone, search SFHS Wheaton.
Powder Puff Signup
This year's homecoming Powder Puff game is scheduled for Thursday, September 22! Freshman through senior ladies can sign up to be on the team at 7:00 a.m. AND 2:35 p.m. on Wednesday, August 31 AND Thursday, September 1 in Room 1208. Students must sign up and turn in their money by the end of signup on September 1 to be considered for the team. The cost for the junior/senior Powder Puff jersey is $30, and the freshmen/sophomore shirt is $20. Students have been instructed to get approval from their coach before they sign up if they are a fall athlete.  If they are not a fall athlete, they must be physically able to participate in P.E. in order to sign up. They must also have permission from their parents before signing up. Anyone who is chosen for the team, but who did not seek out proper approval will forfeit their money and will not be replaced on the team. Students who are not chosen for the team and do not wish to purchase a shirt if not on the team will have their money refunded to them.  Powder Puff teams will be chosen by random drawing from those who signed up, and the teams will be posted outside of Room 1208 on September 6. Good luck to all!
Arts & Crafts Club
The Arts & Crafts Club is back in action for another year of creativity & fun! The club meets on two Mondays each month from 2.35 p.m. to 3.30 p.m. The club provides students with fun, creative Arts & Crafts projects and is a wonderful opportunity to meet new friends. The first meeting is this Monday, August 29 at 2.35 p.m. Students will create and decorate their own school supplies and room decor.  Students can still sign-up by contacting Mrs. Rupp at or see her in the Guidance Department.
Outta Uniform
Friday, August 26 is our first Outta Uniform day of the 2016-17 school year. To participate students will donate $3.00 for the privilege of being Outta Uniform. Students and parents often ask:

The money is used to fund student groups and activities (otherwise unfunded) and to supplement school projects and/or causes, and relevant community and social service projects. Both students and staff are encouraged to propose Outta Uniform projects/purchases. Here are some examples:
  • Renovation of the Spartan Theater;
  • AC in the East Wing;
  • A new sound and lighting system for the Kuhn Cultural Arts Center;
  • Poster printer;
  • The improved and updated security system in the building.
All students are invited and encouraged to become part of the Outta Uniform Committee, the group that decides which projects and purchases are funded. The committee's first meeting is at 7:15 a.m., Thursday, September 25.

This is a once a month program, and students are assessed an additional fine if they participate in Outta Uniform and fail to make their donation by the end of the day. However, in an effort to make life easier, the Outta Uniform Committee is offering students the opportunity, to pay for Outta Uniform for the entire year: $30.00 for freshmen, sophomores and juniors and $27.00 for seniors. Make checks payable to SFHS and save yourself and your student the hassle of remembering Outta Uniform money for the rest of the year.

For information on acceptable Outta Uniform dress, students should refer to their Student Handbook.
Freshman Success Group
As in previous years, the short term Freshman Success Group will be offered during the first semester. Starting at a new school can be a difficult time in a young person's life. Fears of change can be overwhelming for some young people. However, with encouragement, this transition can be a positive new start.

For all of the above reasons, the Guidance & Counseling Department will again offer the optional six-week group for freshman. This group, facilitated by Mrs. Rupp and Ms. Pettenuzzo, will meet once a week during rotating class periods. The group will offer freshmen the opportunity to meet new people, to learn more about St. Francis and ask questions in a small, non-threatening environment. The second component to the freshman group will be to help students work on study skills, test taking techniques and how to use the Surface Pro to stay organized.

The group is also an excellent addition for those students who took the Freshman Workshop over the summer as the group will provide additional, in-depth tips for High School Success.
Group size is limited and registration is required.

If you would like more information on this group or on any of the other support groups available at St. Francis High School, contact Mrs. Rupp at ext. 1104 or email at
