In November, juniors Katie and Molly McCarthy were among 20 students to receive Youth Service Awards from Naperville’s Mayor Steve Chirico, the City Council of Naperville, and KidsMatter.
The McCarthy twins were nominated and awarded for their volunteer work as “Naturalist Macgyvers” (Morton Arboretum Children’s Garden Youth Volunteers) at the Morton Arboretum where they both run activities for the visiting children and families. They also were promoted to the Senior Macgyver Program, where they serve as volunteer mentors. As Macgyvers, both girls have the opportunity to interact with guests, practice public speaking, and develop skills in early childhood education, as well as environmental interpretation.
Krista Childs, Children’s Garden Program Coordinator, nominated both girls saying that Katie’s “intelligent feedback, creative ideas, and patient guidance of younger volunteers have helped shape the program…and Molly undertakes every task with a positive attitude and a thorough approach, making her a pinnacle of leadership and a role model for other volunteers to emulate.” Childs also said she is honored to have worked with both girls.
Congratulations Katie and Molly!
