While St. Francis High School does not have a gymnastics team, two of its students have found success outside of school and in the gym.
Junior Shea Mahoney and freshman Bridget Killian, members of the Legacy Elite gymnastics team out of Carol Stream, both qualified for, competed and placed in last week’s USA Gymnastics Regional Championships in Ohio.
Shea Mahoney, who was the Level 10 All-Around, Vault, Uneven Bars and Beam State Champion, went on to achieve the highest All-Around score (38.8) among the entire Region 5 Champion competitors, including all age groups. She scored a 9.7 on every event which earned her the All-Around, Beam, Uneven Bars and Floor Championships, as well as a 3rd place on vault. Shea will advance to compete for Region 5 in the USA Junior Olympic National Championships in Des Moines, Iowa in May. “We are so happy for her,” said Shannon Mahoney, Shea’s mother, “It has been quite an amazing season for her.”
Bridget Killian, who placed second on the Beam, third All-Around, sixth on the Bars and was the Level 10 Floor Champion at the Illinois State Competition, also placed and medaled at the Regional Championships. While she just missed qualifying for Nationals by .05, she did finish 12th All-Around. “We are proud of what she accomplished in her first year of Level 10,” said Jackie Killian, Bridget’s mother.
Congratulations to both Shea and Bridget!
