The St. Francis High School Community would like to extend our condolences to the Conser and Hughes families on the passing of Susie Conser Hughes '66.

Susie passed on November 20, 2014 after a lengthy and courageous battle with emphysema.  Susie is gratefully united with her husband Durward “Derby” Hughes, her mother Jean Conser, father, Charles Conser, sister Diane, and brother Dick.  Susie leaves behind her cherished twin and best friend, Carol Conser McGever '66 (Arizona), and brothers Jack '62 (Florida), Jerry '63 (Texas), Chuck '65 (Phoenix) and Michael Conser (California).

Susie gave her all to this life on earth realizing many accomplishments primarily in her lifelong goal to help others.  She had an incurable zest for life and great sense of humor.   Growing up in the Chicago area Susie attended St. Francis (Wheaton) and graduated from Mundelein College in Illinois.  Susie was highly recognized for her athletic abilities, including basketball and football. At Mundelein College she started the first woman's football team and played quarterback. She also started the first woman's basketball team at Mundelein College playing center.  Susie moved to Phoenix and later met the love of her life marrying Derby Hughes in 1975.

Susie established the first ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease organization) support group in Arizona in 1986 and participated in many fund raising activities for ALS, a disease that took her beloved Derby from her in 1989.  Susie enjoyed a gratifying career in restaurant management beginning with Far West Services and other restaurants in Phoenix, and ultimately managing the beautiful Summerhouse in California.

Susan is also survived by 8 Nieces, 7 Nephews, 10 Grand Nieces, 8 Grand Nephews, 1 Great Grand Niece and 1 Great Grand Nephew.
