Last year, St. Francis High School sophomore Shea Mahoney finished third All-Around and first in Floor at the Junior Olympic National Championships which earned her a spot on the USA Junior Olympic National Team.  Shea works very hard, putting in 28-30 hours of practice each week at Legacy Elite Gymnastics in Carol Stream and began this season as a winner in many individual events, as well as placing first All-Around at three of her meets.

Qualifying her for the USA Gymnastics Junior Olympic Regionals, Shea is the State Champion on floor and also finished 2nd All-Around at State.  The Regionals were recently held in Michigan where Shea finished both the Floor and All-Around as Champion.  Ranking as one of the top seven gymnasts in All-Around means Shea has earned a spot on the Region 5 National Team and she will advance to the USA Gymnastics Junior Olympics National Championships.  The United States is divided into eight regions and Region 5 includes Illinois, Michigan, Indiana, Ohio and Kentucky.

Shea’s parents are excited.  Shannon Mahoney, Shea’s mom, said, “It is a great accomplishment to win and be in the top seven athletes from five states and then go on to compete at National Championships.  We are so happy for her!”
